Sandwiched in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a turn of the century concrete frame structure was subjected to the mandatory non-ductile concrete retrofit ordinance developed by the City of Los Angeles. The seven-level structure was evaluated and retrofit with concrete shear walls founded on a mat foundation with deepened piles to provide lateral stability to the aging structure.

The existing columns were wrapped in a glass-fiber reinforced polymer to provide added strength to prevent brittle failures during strong earthquake shaking. In addition to the seismic retrofit of the existing structure, improvements were made to the existing facade, interiors, and rooftop for a future private lounge/bar.
