Nous has formed partnerships with Mass Design Group working in Africa and has had the great pleasure to provide engineering support on a number of exemplary new facilities in under-served developing communities.

These projects require a return to basics where raw materials are limited, budgets are minimal and experienced tradesmen are far and few between. At the same time, “fresh thinking” and a commitment to good design can produce beautiful works of architecture and foster a sense of dignity in people whose communities suffer from conflict, poverty and neglect.

1. AFRICAN WILDLIFE FOUNDATION
AWF is working to build 15 conservation schools across africa in the next ten years. Nous engineering and mass design group have partnered with the AWF to develop internal capacity and establish a system to keep costs down by building out a training and fellowship program for African engineers.

Raw materials are limited, budgets are minimal.

2. BUTARO HOSPITAL BUTARO CANCER CENTER
Located near the Butaro Hospital, this rehabilitation of an existing dilapidated building and new addition serves cancer patients. Nous assisted with both components.

3. BUTARO HOSPITAL
This remote medical facility is located in the mountainous northern region of Rwanda. The facility experienced damage after a severe storm and structural deficiencies were found resulting from faulty construction practices. Nous provided a seismic assessment and retrofit of existing long-span steel truss roof.

Good design can produce beautiful works of architecture and foster a sense of dignity in people whose communities suffer from conflict.

4. MUNINI DISTRICT HOSPITAL
This new 170,000sf, 300-bed facility located in Munini, Rwana will set a new standard of referral hospital infrastructure that heals in Rwanda and beyond to all of Sub-Saharan Africa.
