LEAGUE OF SHADOWS
Los Angeles, CA USA
2013

League of Shadows was a temporary pavilion intended as a backdrop to the graduation ceremony at The Southern California Institute of Architecture. The vertical presence of the project is not only meant to counterpoint to the schools long horizontal configuration (once a train maintenance facility), but was also informed by lighting studies to produce shade from the sun during the late afternoon. The light-weight steel dia-grid frame of the cantilevered structure can be deconstructed into three individual primitives. Each leans against the other to create a rocking mechanism designed to absorb lateral wind loading which results in minimal foundation requirements. The delicate steel doubles as a sub-frame for tensioned fabric skin to attach to.
