SUNSHADE AT TEMPLE OF ISRAEL HOLLYWOOD
Los Angeles, CA USA
2016
This highly engineered louvered shade is both practical and provides an elegant exterior feature for the New Temple Israel of Hollywood. The shade is constructed of thin aluminum plate, which is made structurally rigid when bent or folded. The result leaves a clean edge and gives a sense of lightness. Nous optimized the material thickness based on wind load regions across the façade and structural span. The design intent was to have a column free corner condition to fully express the delicate folding of the louver. Thermal differences were also simulated to ensure the cladding would be compatible with the building structure as outside temperatures change throughout the year.
