Dark Chalet is an architecturally ambitious 7,000SF single family residence situated on a steeply sloped site in Utah. 20ft of loose fill material was removed from the hillside and permanent steel soldier piles with tie-back were used to hold the soil back. As the floor plan jogs and steps, there are few opportunities for a continuous load path to foundations. The central room of the house boasts 20' cantilevers. The open interior with minimal structure was achieved with a long-span steel and timber roof.
